School Gates

Meadows First and Fairfield Middle School, Bromsgrove.

A lasting legacy capturing the past, present and future of Bromsgrove's community and industrial history.

Symbolising the merging of two schools through branches of two trees growing, spreading and entwining, pupils of the schools undertook a range of workshops to ensure their designs were incorporated into these impressive school gates.

The 'fruits' of the tree contain symbols of the nail and chain making local industrial history, and celebrate the Bromsgrove Guild of Craftsmen. Children aged 8-13 years of age enjoyed a series of visits and demonstrations to bring history alive and engage them in their local industrial heritage.

The new shoots of the tree contain cast glass roundels, each encasing the children's own designs of their aspirations and hopes for the future.

This project at Bromsgrove resulted in the installation of these incredible 8 metre wide gates. The industrial history recognised and celebrated within the design provide a testament to the area, and the people that continue to live and take pride in their community. As the pupils grow and future generations learn about the symbols within the gates, the continuum of this knowledge will outlast its creators, becoming industrial history itself.
